In this fun and creative workshop, you'll learn how to design and carve a piece of lino, which you can then print onto a variety of papers. The entire process will be clearly demonstrated.
Smooth watercolour paper and textured khadi paper (made from cotton) will be available. Both are beautiful to print on and will produce different results.
You're welcome to bring your own design, or if you're not confident in your drawing skills, you can use the design ideas provided by your tutor. If you're bringing your own design, please ensure it will fit onto a piece of lino that measures 7.5 x 7.5 cm.
All tools and materials needed for the workshop will be provided, including traditional hessian-backed lino, carving tools, papers, and a range of coloured inks.
You’ll also be able to take your carved lino block home for future use. Additionally, everyone will receive an information sheet with a list of suppliers for printmaking materials.
There may also be an opportunity to purchase extra supplies on the day (cash payments only).
About Sarah
Sarah, who lives in Shaftesbury North Dorset, trained in graphic design and illustration at Bath Art Collage, graduating in the early 1990's, and has been a practicing artist ever since.
After attending an inspirational and immersive weekend course of lino cut about 15 years ago, she now focuses mainly on printmaking. She is passionate about the countryside and creates decorative prints, with nature providing the reference for the designs; mainly close-up details of plants and flowers but also wider views and subjects from the countryside.
Lino is such a versatile medium and Sarah has more recently started printing onto fabric and is delighted to find a whole world of possibilities for her designs!
She loves the opportunities that running a workshop provides - collaborating with inspirational venues, the sociability of meeting new people and, of course, the pleasure of passing on the skills needed to make successful linocuts.
The best thing about running a workshop is witnessing the moment of delight as a student sees their print appear from a simple, inky block of lino for the first time.
