Join this one-day beginners workshop and discover the traditional craft of willow basket making using Somerset willow. The course is led by Tori Sadler, for whom willow weaving is a family craft — she is the daughter of renowned basket maker Jo Sadler, who also runs courses here on the Estate. The workshop will take place in the intimate, characterful setting of our Old Pottery and will focus on creating a classic frame basket — an ancient, simple design ideal for foraging, vegetable picking, collecting eggs or light shopping.
You’ll learn how to select and prepare willow rods, construct the main frame and ribs and weave the body of the basket using traditional techniques, including packing weave. With Tori’s supportive, relaxed teaching style, you’ll be guided through each stage of the process and gain a deeper understanding of how willow behaves as you work. By the end of the day, you’ll take home a practical, well-shaped basket of your own.
On arrival, you’ll be welcomed with a slice of delicious homemade cake and your choice of tea or coffee. There will also be a lunch break, during which you’ll enjoy a two-course meal prepared by Symondsbury Kitchen using local, seasonal produce. You’ll have time to explore our beautiful grounds and browse our selection of independent and Estate shops, or relax and chat with your new willow weaving friends.
All tools and materials are provided. Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothing you don’t mind getting a little grubby.
